Chapter 3: The Intersection of Law and the Arts

One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is the opportunity to travel and meet remarkable people from diverse backgrounds. Recently, I’ve had the privilege of connecting with students who are pursuing careers in Law. As you might imagine, the road to becoming a lawyer is demanding, requiring focus, discipline, and countless hours of study. But what has been most surprising in my conversations with these aspiring legal professionals is how many of them maintain a study-life balance through hobbies rooted in the arts and service.

Whenever I meet with these students, I always ask one common question: How do you manage your study-life balance? Many have told me that having hobbies outside of their studies is essential for their mental and emotional well-being. Time and again, their answers surprise me. Many of these students, draw or paint, sing or play an instrument, or give their time to community service in order to find some equilibrium in the intensity of their academic life.

This discovery isn’t just a coincidence. It speaks to the powerful, nurturing nature of the arts—and it ties directly into something we’ve believed in for years with our Travel with Grace program. Through this initiative, we work with high school juniors and seniors, encouraging them to explore the world, engage with different cultures, and tap into their creative potential. The goal is to provide young people with a foundation in the arts, so they can carry that sense of creativity and balance with them, no matter what path they choose in life.

When pursuing something as rigorous as Law School, having an outlet like art, music, or service can be invaluable. It becomes a way to stay grounded, to release stress, and to reconnect with yourself amid the chaos.

That’s why it’s so important to start early—building that foundation in youth. The arts provide not only an outlet but a different way of seeing the world. And travel does the same. The more we expose young people to these experiences, the more equipped they are to handle life’s challenges in the future, whether in law or any other field.
